Nuance Reaches for More Horizonal Partners - Grabs up T9 from AOL

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Nuance the owners of Dragon Naturally Speaking purchased T9 from AOL today.  T9 makes the predictive texting software that goes into many, possibly most, mobile phones.  This software helps predict what word you are really typing as you text out a message with your thumbs on a cellular phone.

Nuance is making a significant move into the mobile phone industry.  They purchased MobileVoiceControl Inc in January.

The two technologies from MobileVoiceControl and T9 will give Nuance the ability to create a voice driven predictive messaging capability.

They already own Dragon Naturally Speaking, which I use on a regular basis.

Projector Pocket Mirrors

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

Women can be big geeks just like men, but the world of marketing and engineering is just starting to catch up with a woman’s inner geek.  I have two daughters and I see the geeked out toys that young girls are raised with today, but I don’t see the geeked out gizmo’s showing up for women in their late twenties or beyond.

Maybe that is because the majority of women are under thirty, or so they say . . .

Case in Point

Women that wear makeup use Makeup Mirrors so that they can make little touch ups hear and there when ever a ladies room mirror isn’t available.

However, the technology has been around for sometime to create a Pocket Mirror with a built in Projector, its just been incorporated in a device from a male perspective.  With a little adaptation a woman could point their ‘pocket mirror camera’ at their face and have a resulting image projected onto a wall, they could even store their made up face as a photo and have it display side by side their live face as they attempt to get made up again.  That would even be useful in movie production where continuity is king.

You can bet that if nerdy men wore makeup (more) that this type of device would have been a hit at Fry’s a long time ago, but alas the lasses are still limited in their geeky shopping choices.

It’s way past time for an equality betweent the geekier sexes.

The Tech of Fat Blockers

Friday, June 15th, 2007

Big pharmaceutical companies this week had a great deal to celebrate as an industry.  One of the first over-the-counter nonprescription fat blockers was approved by the FDA.  The drug known as Alli was approved by the FDA.  It is only half as strong as its prescription counterpart.

Alli works by blocking about one-fourth of consumed fat.

Source: Is “Alli” The Holy Grail For Dieters?, Over-The-Counter Pill Promises 50 Percent More Weight Loss For The Same Effort - CBS News

It is already being dubbed a lifestyle drug even though it’s not designed according to representatives to be used for actresses or everyday people who are hoping to lose a few pounds before a big event like a wedding.  It’s intended for people that are very obese to the point that it may be detrimental to their health or even their life.

There are many drugs on the market that are never approved by the FDA.  Some of these can be viewed in a Diet Comparison by the DietAwarenessInstitute.org.

Like all technologies, the application of drug technologies to lifestyles will always be subject to benefits for people and also subject to abuse.  There is not always a black and white answer.  In fact the answer tends to be a moving target depending on the circumstances and application from one company to the next and even from one country to the next.

Is Wall Street Propping Up Motorola?

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

Sometimes when a company goes in the red, its investors, its debtors and its stakeholders fail to recognize their sunk costs.  This might happen due to pride or to save face or to save their job or position or their clients.

I’m not talking about a ponzi scheme, I’m referring to situations that can include vendor financing or a bank bail out or even a hostile take over.

Motorola lost its way in the 1990’s.  Some claim that it never earned its way in the first place and that its resulting fall in late 1999 and early 2000 was less the result of the Internet Bust and more the result of the rest of the world learning that they couldn’t deliver on their promises.

Some might argue that Motorola made so many promises that they fooled themselves out of business.  They forgot that they were good at manufacturing.  Motorola got caught up in the ‘information technology’ boom and thought the future was in inventing and engingeering new products.

But all those products need to be manufactured and sold by someone.  Motorola sold off their manufacturing capability and became reliant on outsourced partners.  They did this in 2000 and 2001 under file fire sale conditions.  They ended up giving up a great deal of intellectual property and knowledge along the way too.

Since that time they have underperformed the major stock indexes.  Underperform is still better than going out of business.

The question becomes why have they been able to continue?

They have underperformed but they have kept up with the growth rates.  That is somewhat surprising and speaks to some ‘heroic’ efforts by a cadre of Motorola employees attempting to save the company.

A company can only underperform for so long before they go bust or get purchased.  If you have bet on Motorola over the last seven years, you should be ashamed of yourself, :) for betting.  Investors still holding Motorola are making a mistake.

This company has lost its way, they have lost their identity and they have lost the ability to be honest with themselves about the big picture.

Who is propping up this company?

That begs the question who is funding this pending train wreck?  Is it their vendors, is it their investors, bankers, pension fund holders or hedge fund managers?

I don’t have the answer for that but they are about to get tested.  The ITC has ruled that Qualcomm’s chips are to be banned.  Motorola was counting on those chips to run the Razr 2.

No Razr 2 success and Motorola might miss the 3G run that every other mobile phone maker has been preparing for since Motorola first started running into problems in 2000.

Next week gamblers betting on Motorola may have their bet called and they may be forced to decide on going ‘All In’.  Would you bet the farm on Motorola after 7 years of poor performance?

The ruling next week could prove to be very difficult for Motorola’s future, but if gamblers fail to bet the farm next week a shake up in Motorola could happen much much faster.

Motorola may not survive long enough to see the ‘Grinch steal Christmas Phones‘.

Laptop Cooling Analogy to Cooktop Stoves

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Not too long ago I upgraded my kitchen. We tore out of wall that separated a dining room and a kitchen that were both rather compartmentalized and we’ve put in a great big Island with cooktop stove. Cooktop stoves do not have range hoods to suck out the hot steamy air that would rise up off conventional stovetops. Instead it has a fan built into the center of the cooktop stove that draws the steam and smoke down into the cooktop itself and out through events that go up through the floorboards of the House.

This technology fights the natural progression that hot air would like to make as it attempts to rise, however it does do a good job of minimalizing the impact on the space above the cooktop.

The laptop analogy to cooktop stoves

Now as I look at the fans used on cooktop stoves, I come back to the fundamental question and problem that I always face with my laptop. How to keep it cool and running efficiently and strange conditions especially when I’m working outside life and this evening. I have to wonder if the would be possible to create a desk similar to a hockey table where you play air hockey that has holes in it that move air. Those holes could instead of pushing air of suck air down pulling the hot air surrounding the laptop service down into the desk and out through events. Instead of blowing cool air on the laptop you could take the hot air away essentially.

Similar to a aerosol can that contains compressed air, the air leaving the can could even serve to cool the of the desk. There’s got to be a better way it’s a simple thing…

Digital Recorders and Dragon

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

I’m working on my third day using Dragon NaturallySpeaking.  Today I’ve been getting better at using a digital recorder in conjunction with dragon.  I can record anything on my digital recorder, transfer the wave file over to my computer, and use the Dragon NaturallySpeaking transcription capability to convert it into text.

Keep The Recording Rate High Enough to Transcribe

I’ve used a digital recorder for quite a few years for lots of different purposes.  In the past, I always used the lowest compression method of proximally 16 kB per second.  This allowed me to maximize the amount of recording time I can get on a memory card.

The quality is just fine for my purposes at this recording rate.  However, recently after I’ve started use Dragon NaturallySpeaking I’ve learned that if I use a higher compression rate 43 kb or higher fat dragon can then transcribe the sound files I make with my digital recorder automatically.

This is extremely convenient now. I can take my voice notes transcribe them into text and they can be searched through various different search tools on my computer, such as Google desktop.

Don’t Forget the Punctuation

The only downside is that if I want to utilize Dragon NaturallySpeaking I need to remember to make my voice notes with punctuation such as, saying the word ‘Period’ or ‘Coma’.

I’m truthfully very amazed at just how well this system and software works with Dragon NaturallySpeaking.  When I was attempting to do research on the product, several of the reviews led me to believe that the digital recorder device might not be compatible with Dragon NaturallySpeaking.  It’s now my experience with one device, but as long as you’re wave compression rate is high enough to probably be okay.

Potential Usage

With this capability I can write a paper or an e-mail or dozens of e-mails.  I can read an e-mail that comes in on my phone and I can respond to it in full without having to type my thumbs into nubs.  I can respond by a voice file.

I can then transfer it to my computer and convert it to transcribed text. Then I can copy paste it into e-mail and send it back.  This may not work for every short little e-mail.  However in those cases were an important e-mail comes in on my phone and a short response won’t work, I can give it a detailed response, while the topic is fresh in my mind.

Hands Free Phone Microphone

Now I just need to find a hands-free microphone for my phone, and I could write lengthy e-mails while driving.

Mapping Web Based POS Solution Benefits -Improving Technology Series

Monday, February 12th, 2007

SalesForce.com may have made the model of moving great software capabilities to the web but they were not the end all solution. Today I would like to cover an excellent example of an improving technology that has improved primarily because it has moved to the Web.

I am reviewing services provided by a sponsor MerchantOS. This is a sponsored review but it is an excellent application and example of the right way build a web based tool for mass adoption.

In this case we’re talking about point of sale software (POS software) services moved from the cash register in a store to a computer in the store connected to the internet. Up front my first and primary concern centered around internet connectivity, what happens when the internet goes down?

MerchantOS provides a system that allows transactions to continue even while the internet is down, caching the transactions for a resynchronization once service is brought back up, so the issue is greatly reduced.

Now in the case of this product web based POS has been very aptly covered by Merchant OS. They have done an excellent job of describing the benefits of their offering. I think that the words are excellent, but would also like to provide a map of those details to help you see the big picture a little more rapidly.

Monday, February 12th, 2007

Simple Server Monitor provies a free trial for a service that allows you to monitor your servers and track performance metrics to insure that the servers are still up and running.

Simple Server Monitor’s program basically can login to your server or service and actively monitor the process that are taking place.  The software runs in as a Windows Service so you do not have to be logged in for it to keep track of your servers.  It will provide event notifications in a pop up or in the form of a group email if anything does not complete on time or if the server goes down.

Its in beta right now.  But its price is normally less than $50.  You can get a 20% discount even on that while its in Beta.
