Where to Report MindManager Bugs to Mindjet

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

In case you find it as difficult as I did to find the Bug Reporting page for MindManager software from Mindjet, I’m posting the link here.  Its not listed in their site map nor on any menus that I could see.

However when I did a search of their site with their search tool on the keywords bug report, the second or third option was the right place.

Here is where you report MindManager Software bugs to Mindjet

For those of you that have been following, I did report the potential bugs I found in MindManager Pro 7

Following Bugs Back to the Nest - MindManagerPro7

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

OK, first I must apologize. I did not get a chance to participate in the beta testing for MindManagerPro 7. As such when I first take it for a spin and start finding a few “issues”, which I will call bugs, because I am a consultant and not a programmer, I get curious and want to track them down.

For those of you that are not members of the Yahoo Group for MindManager, I would encourage you to join. If you can not join another group, then I will share with you below some of the results of my findings as a follow up to my last post

Possible MindManager 7 Bug - Small Little thing

My response in the Groups and my new findings ( A couple more bugs) or at least abnormalities.

I attempted to utilize the background(in my initial testing), and transparency settings in the Marketing Strategy Template in a different map. I did not get the same problem when I did that.

So it seemed to be something unique for this map(so far).

But I did just test your(Refering to Nick Dufill’s suggestion to change either the background image, background color, or transparency level) suggestion.

  • When I change the transparency from 35% to 0% the problem goes away.
  • When I change the transparency back from 0% to 35% the problem comes right back.
  • When I change the color of the topic box from light gray to light blue, the problem remains.
  • When I remove the background image (this leaves a gray background) the problem goes away.
  • When I then assign a new different background image, no problem appears. (I tested 5 different backgrounds)

After all those changes, when I put the original background image back into the map, the problem comes back.

So it would seem to be an issue with the background image included with this template.

Then I thought I might try and get smart (you might suspect a mistake coming). ;;)

Pro6 - Same Issue

I opened the file I had saved as a mmap file in MMPro6. I get the same error as in 7. Can’t read the text while typing.

I also noticed that the map layout of this particular map when viewed in MMPro6 was drastically different than in MMPro7. Its a split tree in mmPro7, but when I open it in MMPro 6 it is changed for no reason to a generic map layout where the growth direction is concerned.

That is pretty troubling!

So then I created a new map with a split tree growth direction. saved it and opened it in Pro6 to see if I would lose formatting again.

No re-formatting this time?????

X5Pro possibly incompatible all together (for this file not all maps)

I saved my mindmap based on this template. I then tried to open it with MMX5Pro.

Well apparently that was a bad idea. MMX5Pro crashes when I attempt to open that file. “The instruction at 0×00adff50 referenced memory at 0×0ec5f7c0. The memory could not be read.” Click OK to terminate program.

So that was nice.

MMX5Pro did not have any difficulty opening up the maps in my My Maps folder created with MMPro6. This just happened to be the first file saved my MMPro7 that I had attempted to open with X5Pro. I thought, I hope they are backwards compatible?

So I made a simple map in 7, saved it and opened it in x5pro. No error.

So I am thinking that there must be something intrinsic to that file created from that template.

I thought, maybe its that troubling background again?

So I opened the file again, removed the background image, and saved it with a fresh new file name. Opened it in X5pro and it crashed again with the same error. :-/

I tried creating a couple more maps from random pro7 templates, saving them as mmap files and opening in x5pro. No problems.

Conclusion so far

I think there must be at least 2 issues with that template.

1. Something must not be kosher with the background image -> Creating the error I initially mentioned.

2. Something else must not be kosher somewhere in the files that the template generates, causing an incompatability with X5Pro

3. Bugs are like ants. If you see one bug there are probably more of them somewhere else. ;)

Thanks,

Brett

Possible MindManager 7 Bug - Small Little thing

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

I was getting organized for some future tutorials with MindManager Pro 7 and I may have stumbled across a little bug.

It may be a program bug or it may be a bug in relation to a standard map template that MindManager ships with called the “Marketing Strategy” Template.

The bug basically seems to happen when you attempt to write over the title of the main topic, or update the text of the title of the main topic in any way. While you are doing it, the text is completely illegible. Its as if there’s a shadow of text behind the topic that is not getting corrected. I haven’t seen this on any other map yet. So I did a quick little screen video of the phenomena and

I’m going to check the consensus with the Yahoo! Group community for MindManager before I send it up to Mindjet. (still don’t have a Mindjet labs account yet - not sure where to send it so I’ll check with the community for consensus before I invest the time in tracking down the Mindjet submission process . . .)

Installation of MindManager Pro 7 - Simple and Fast

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

I installed MindManager Pro 7 from Mindjet last night and the installation went off with out a hitch. I’m running Windows XP Home Media center on a Vista capable machine (haven’t installed Vista yet, I’ve been delaying due to QuickBooks 2006).

I put together a video to offer up a demonstration of the installation and my initial impressions looking at the software once it launched. I will follow up with many more videos on the use of MindManager Pro 7.

I have also been toying with the idea of a series of tutorial videos showing users how to perform the same task in 3 versions of MindManager:

  • X5Pro
  • Pro 6
  • Pro 7

Mindjet would love to have you purchase the latest version, and it probably will be the best place to start for new users. That said I run all three versions myself to get special capabilities offered by each (although I suspect I may not need to keep Pro 6 now that I have Pro 7). Never the less, I would like to share the tutorials for all three versions.

Can’t wait to get started, more to follow as I get into the install and the first impressions after that . . .

Is the MindManager 7 t-shirt Cool?

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

Today is the day, today is the day that I’m going to finally install

Mindmanager 7 from Mindjet.  I had intended on installing the software little over a week ago and experience some confusion when I receive the license and e-mail as opposed to an installation CD.  I had what I needed to install the program I just didn’t know it.  :-)

I did receive a Mindjet Mindmanager 7 T-shirt in the mail and I mention this in one of my articles last week.

Stew raised the question of whether or not the T-shirt was as cool or cooler than the Mindjet baseball hat.

I don’t know the answer to that because I don’t have the baseball hat and I don’t believe that I’ve seen it.(search revealed this Mindjet schwag; not my schwag, my schwag doesn’t take up as much real estate, but I’m not complaining. I’m moving soon and excess schwag won’t do me any favors, but I digress.)

However I did snap picture of the T-shirt as I was booting up my computer this morning.

Is the Mindmanager seven T-shirt cool?

MindManager 7 Tshirt coolness debateMindManager 7 Tshirt coolness debate 2

You will have to be the judge of that and my apologies to mindjet if I’ve made it look less cool.  It’s Saturday and I neglected to shape today and yesterday, one of the benefits of working from home.

No MindManager 7 CD Waiting . . .

Friday, June 8th, 2007

I mentioned yesterday that I just could not wait to get home and install the new MindManager 7.  I was expecting the CD to have shipped out on the launch date, May 30.  I was traveling that week and just returned home last night.

So I expected that the CD would probably make it my way in a couple days via snail mail.

Unfortunately, I was wrong.  :(

I did receive a great MindManager 7 t-shirt, which I really like but it doesn’t quite deliver that same amount of productivity that the actual software provides.  Sure I feel pretty comfortable today as I sit at my desk in the MindManager T-shirt, but it would be oh so much better to be test driving the new software.

What about the MindManager 7 Beta?

Some of you may point out that the beta has been available for a long time.  Well for whatever reason, my password for Mindjet labs went bad about 18 months ago, and I have never been able to find someone at Mindjet to fix it.

So I wasn’t notified about the beta test last fall.  In fact I didn’t know about MM7 until about 45 days ago.  I received the recommendation from Mindjet to sign up for the beta then, which I did right away.  Unfortunately, I have never heard from Mindjet on the beta either.

No Mindjet labs, no MindManager 7 Beta, No MindManager 7.

I guess that’s three strikes and I’m out!

Still Glad to have the consolation prize t-shirt.

You can never have enough t-shirts when you work from a home office!  :)

Going Home to MindManager 7

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

I have been traveling the last two weeks and haven’t been home to pick up my mail. I am expecting to have received a package from Mindjet with the new version of MindManager 7.  I can’t wait to take the new software for a test drive and see how it works.  In just a few hours I’ll hopefully be opening up a new software and install it on my computer and preparing some video tutorials with the new software in action!

Did MindManager Beta Testing NDA’s Unintentionally Silence Product Evangelists?

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

Recently Mindjet announced the upcoming release of their latest MindManager Version, MindManager Pro 7. MindManager has been utilizing beta testers for the last several months. I queried the MindManager Group at Yahoo! to ask how many people from this group had participated in the beta program.
Several of the responses from members indicated that they had agreed to an NDA with Mindjet that they understood would prevent them from confirming or denying their participation in the beta program. At first I took that for what it was and recognized that these members did not want to harm Mindjet nor breach the NDA. That is very positive and speaks to the loyalty of MindManager users to Mindjet, a loyalty that I share I might add.

I then considered that Mindjet is working very hard, now, to generate buzz about their new version and simultaneously push sales for the Month of May on their old version. People that buy now will get an upgrade to the new version when its available at the end of May.

***Please note I am a MindManager reseller, but I do not advise that you buy it from me. You can get better buys elsewhere on the internet. The channel pricing structure in place does not allow me to be competitive in my pricing of MindManager products any longer. I am considering the removal of these products from my own business, but have not done that yet.

Beta Testing Confidentiality Vs. Rollout Promotion of New Product

It would seem that Mindjet has come to be in a position where their loyal beta testers are attempting to protect the company based on an NDA that Mindjet required. These same beta testers would normally be the promoters and evangelists and word of mouth front line for the product. However, they now have the perception that they are legally compelled not to discuss the new product! That could be great from an information control perspective but its definitely not good from a marketing perspective.

So I re-read the NDA and it does not prevent participants from stating that they were involved in the Beta testing. It does prevent people from sharing their experiences or knowledge gained from the beta participation.

As the MM7 release was built for the Office 2007 standard (essentially a beta itself), I would think that Mindjet would want to utilize as many beta testers as possible and especially those from the Yahoo! MindManager Group community that is one of the largest mindmapping communities open to the public. As Mindjet has essentially a beta(MM7) to work with a beta(Office 2007) on an existing OS and on a beta OS (Vista), it would seem that they could use all the beta testing help they could get. This prompted my initial question to the group.

Therefore, as I read everyone’s responses regarding the NDA, it struck me that Mindjet’s beta testing for MM7 and the perceptions that beta testers were not allowed to discuss MM7 may have had a chilling effect on the Yahoo MindManager forum over the last few months. If forum members engage in a project that does not allow them to discuss the topic of the forum, that seems to harm the community a bit. As this community involves the sharing of best practices and many other nuances of mindmapping and MindManager in particular, it strikes me that this same movement has probably harmed Mindjet as well. Essentially, Mindjet’s beta program has served to halt conversation about Mindjet products as it relates to knew innovations and possibly new best practices.

Transparency vs Secrecy in Business

Now, anyone that reads my blog probably is aware that I do not subscribe to the Apple theory of doing business in an information void contained by complete and total secrecy. I think that business is best served when people and stakeholders operate transparently and communicate.

In fact, this is one of the great benefits of mindmapping. It helps people to share information transparently faster, easier, more efficiently and with less obfuscation by data or lists of facts. So it strikes me, that our group has essentially been silenced a bit by the company we all evangelize and promote at a time when they need us to talk about their product and share more information with each other and with new potential users.

Please understand I am not trying to be critical of any members in the Yahoo! MindManager group. I can definitely understand the perception around the NDA, but I did want to remark on the unintended consequences of the beta program. There are some very good reasons why a beta program might be covered under an NDA, some of which have been mentioned in recent replies such as

  • Helping to set user expectations for the actual product to be rolled out as opposed to options tested and held back
  • Not airing complaints about bugs identified during testing that may have not been fixed in the beta testers desired way in the final version
  • Not sharing information that might be used or stolen by competitors

These are all important items to manage during a beta program. However, these items should not not take place in a way that

  • Silences product evangelists from discussing the product
  • Stops or hinders product buzz and word of mouth promotion
  • Prevents collaborative discussion of the beta such that users can share insights into the product providing Mindjet with a better understanding of the scope of an issue or opportunity
  • Creates an artificially created information void at the time the product is launched or announced by silencing beta users from sharing their experience (As an example consider how compelling some ‘behind the scenes’ features are for some movies, and how these are used to market a movie product and get people to buy or watch a movie.)

At a minimum it would seem that Mindjet needs to find a middle ground on this issue either now or in the future. If they must operate in secrecy behind an NDA, then they need to balance that with the ability to allow their beta testers to transform from a free testing resource over to a free marketing and word of mouth evangelism resource. They could attempt to prevent product evangelists from participating in the beta program, but that would remove some of the most experienced MindManager gurus from providing help and guidance in developing a better product. They need the beta testing help of this community, but they also need the voice of the community.

I’d suggest that they would even benefit from the perceived behind the scenes look about the development of the product. Mindjet was founded by Mike and Betina Jetter. Together, they provided an extremely compelling story about the early development of MindManager 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 in a book that featured Mike’s battle against cancer. That behind the scenes connection to the creators and the creative process is extremely compelling. If Mindjet were to open up their beta testing program and allow beta testers to share their beta testing stories after Mindjet announces the eminent launch of the product, Mindjet could benefit from the experiences and voice of their beta testers. Essentially, they benefit from free testing services provided by beta testers and this free beta testing experience then becomes feature rich content to help communicate the journey of MindManager from version 6.0 to 7.0.

Its notable that mindmaps help people see the connections and relationships between one topic and another. If Mindjet were to show the developmental relationship from 6.0 to 7.0 via their own developers and their network of beta testers, they would essentially benefit that much more. They would help potential buyers make the connection between 6.0 and 7.0 and that information could make the difference in a purchase decision or in the speed of a purchase decision!
