I came across this interesting video example of a virtual conference and meeting event, The Virtual VIP Show on blip.tv . 

Now, this event does take place in SecondLife, and while SecondLife does have huge potential to help people connect together more effectively and efficiently, it has had some issues in the past with people engaging in behavior that is not always conducive to a corporate setting.

That said the platform is still viable.  You wouldn’t write off doing business in a major city like San Francisco or Boston, or New York or London, just because the cities contain some seedier sides of town.  The same goes for SecondLife.  You have to know where to go, and how to get there.
