Wait Until August 7th- Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Here in 8 days!

In about 8 days (as I write this, it is July 30th if you are reading this on August 7th or later, Buy! Buy! Buy!  :)  )  Nuance will release Dragon Naturally Speaking 10.  I just spoke with Nuance corporate offices.  They will not currently promise a free upgrade if you purchase Dragon Naturally Speaking 9 today.  They will give you your money back within 30 days of purchase.

In theory you could buy Dragon Naturally Speaking 9 today, get your money back on August 7th, and buy Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 on the 7th.  That seems like a lot of hassle, but then again DNS fans like myself are almost as nutty as Apple iPhone fans.

Seriously, the wisest move is to wait until Dragon Naturally Speaking Version 10 comes out in just 8 days and make your purchase then.  If you are one of my readers, I would not want you to have to go through any red tape or hassle unless you just have to have it today.  In which case, I do understand!

I would have loved to see Nuance offer some type of download certificate or free upgrade promise to recent Version 9 buyers.  To my knowledge they have not done that yet. I’m hoping they come around on this, as it doesn’t make too much sense to hit the pause button on sales for a week.

There are a number of great new features that will be available with Dragon Naturally Speaking 10, which we will cover shortly.  I have not yet seen any releases on Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 upgrade prices for those of us that have been using version 8 or version 9 of Dragon Naturally Speaking.  Given the productivity increases that you can get with Dragon Naturally Speaking, the upgrade price will definitely be worth it, after all, who makes the decision to opt to run a slower program rather than run a faster program that increases accuracy too?

Dragon Naturally Speaking Accuracy Boost over version 9

Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 will be 20% more accurate than Dragon Naturally Speaking 9.  Plus words will appear on the screen much faster as you speak.

Faster Words Displayed on Screen with Dragon Naturally Speaking 10

In the past the words would often times “catch up with your voice” but you did not always get the immediate feedback and gratification of seeing those words show up on the screen immediately.  That sometimes created situations for user error, where you might repeat yourself thinking that the program had missed something, when in fact it rarely missed anything.

So in the meantime, get ready to buy. The deals will be all over online and you won’t need a GPS to find that obscure little store selling an outdate version at clearance prices. This new version is too important to miss.

Help, I’m confused. I want to buy Dragon and have read several posts regarding 10 that say there are a lot of problems and to stick with version 9; that it’s not worth the upgrade. I also want to be able to use a digital recorder; does that mean I should get Dragon NS 9 Mobile? or the Preferred? I thought a digital recorder could be used with either version. I called Nuance’s Customer Service and got no-where. The gal just didn’t understand my questions and it was as though she was reading from a preprinted sheet. What digital recorders do you recommend? Am I able to use the microphone while sitting at my computer as well as the digital recorder when away from my desk? I am not a computer whiz and would appreciate your advice! Thank you.

    Hi L, :)

I think I can help a bit. You can use either Dragon Preferred 9 or Dragon Preferred 10 with a digital device. The key word there is ‘Preferred’. There is a Basic version that does not support mobile transcription.

(ergo if you want to use a mobile recorder, you need the Preferred Version or something higher)

I use a Sony IC recorder (IC-70 i think) see image in this article http://www.softduit.com/mavenmappersinformation/2008/08/27/dragon-naturally-speaking-10-mobile-device-transcription-tip-copy-the-file-dont-transcribe-from-the-device/

Sony does bundle a slightly higher end model of the IC recorder with Dragon Preferred 9. The combo deal costs about $199 if you can find it. I have seen it from time to time at a couple different Office Depots, but its not always in stock, and I don’t think they make/bundle it any more.

I believe the confusion around mobile options that you are experiencing via Nuance (makers of Dragon) comes from the fact that they do not bundle it with mobile devices themselves. Other companies that make devices buy the software and package it together with their devices as far as I can tell.

My Advice for a new buyer

If you want to be able to use the software both on your computer and on a mobile device . . .

If you can find a mobile combination for $200 or better that includes a Sony device and DRagon Naturally Speaking Preferred 9 or 10, Buy it! -> I don’t see them offered very much myself, but I think that is a good deal, although slightly hard to find.

If you are not a super internet shopper or don’t want to comb through Office Depots, then . . .

Buy Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred 10 (not basic)

    and

Buy a Sony IC Recorder model ICDUX and then number 70 or 80

this one does not have an MP3 player built in (you may not need an mp3 player)

is there a cell phone that supports speech to text technology for the hearing impaired, like if I speak to you on a cellphone, what ever I say will be converted to text on real time?

    Rachel,
I believe there are, but I am not familiar with them. There have been technologies like this around that plug into landlines for a year, where by the person receiving the call has a device that converts speech to text. I am not familiar with newer options in this area, but would definitely think it should be possible.

I do know that the technology exists, where you can call a service leave a voice mail and have the voice mail converted to text and emailed. That doesn’t seem to far off what you are asking about.
