Below is video tutorial or demonstration that I put together to show that you can use Dragon Naturally Speaking with music playing in the background.  I was playing music just a few inches away from my microphone and it was playing very loudly in a couple different types of music in this demonstration.

In general I’ve walked away with the perception that you can definitely use Dragon Naturally Speaking with music playing it works very very well in my humble opinion.  I have no affiliation with nuance nor with Dragon NaturallySpeaking I dislike the program it helps me do more in less time without getting worn out and that’s entirely what Maven Mapper’s information’s about.  We’re looking for software programs tools gadgets or anything that makes life easier or more fulfilling or helps improve a person’s performance (Barry Bonds discussions not included.)

All that said I do endorse the use of Dragon Naturally Speaking I think it’s great program and would highly recommend it to anyone.  If you’re looking to mirror my results, I utilize a laptop with 1 GB RAM running windows XP, I have a Toshiba satellite laptop with an Intel Centrino dual processor. (I also endorse the Gorillaz album Demon Days.)

The following is a short article that I wrote the other day during my experiment with Dragon Naturally Speaking 9.

I have not edited this article to show the raw result of the transcription.  I wrote several articles that day and this one probably had the most errors in transcription.  I wanted to hold it out as an example of the results at one extreme.  I do not like to sugar coat the results that I get with DNS9.  Overall they are extremely good.  However, there are times when its less than optimum and this might be a bit of an example to show the type and nature of editing that is needed from time to time.

Develop popular entertainment you probably noticed that in many entertainers as they have for decades and decades are suffering from all manners and types of addictions. I keep looking for technology to step up and take a larger role in helping people overcome their physical addictions. It would seem that a physical problem like a drug addiction could be solved with a physical solution. Now in our biology, our systems get permanently altered like overwriting an operating system when we become addicted to a drug or some other item. It’s like our bios has been overwritten with picked up a new driver or virus even. It seems that there might be a path to solving this type of problem by rewriting it once again or rebooting or refreshing our system. We might be able to avoid the use of drug rehab as we know it today as a place where people go for several weeks if not months and often times relax into their addictions with little benefit or gain. Indeed most people that are addicted to narcotics and alcohol will always be addicted to those substances their addiction will never cease. They are taught how to cope with those substance addictions and addiction is not removed.

It would seem that we need a fundamental shift in our attack on drug addiction.

You will notice that the article starts off making little to no sense.  That is partly because DNS missed the first word or two of the sentence and then incorrectly transcribed the next.  It should have read

You will also notice that the paragraph is exceptionally long. I neglected to remember to insert new paragraphs at regular intervals.  It definitely takes some practice to mentally track your spoken voice and determine where a paragraph ends!

Every now and then you hear a story or two about people that feel that it’s healthy to consume more oxygen. Over the years you may have seen people donning surgical masks, or purchasing hands of oxygen at a bar in Tokyo. Some people live even taken to utilizing something like an oxygen tent on their bed so they can breathe impure oxygen while they’re sleeping. This may make sense if you consider that they are trying to avoid some of the pollution in the air or if they have allergies or a number of other items that are trying to get or remain healthy.

I ran across a topic about a device called a portable oxygen concentrator. In theory this sound like something that you could cart around with you and it would suck in the air from your media vicinity and concentrate the oxygen that’s in that air feeding it to whatever source you want to provide.

I have to be careful with your oxygen as oxygen does encourage flaying. That doesn’t mean that oxygen Burns however fire does burn much better when there is plenty of oxygen to feed that fire, it’s typically one of the components necessary for fire.

So the concept of sleeping in an oxygen tent or utilizing portable oxygen concentrator could enable you to instill a better quality of air and more specifically more oxygen to help your body deal and recover, however you’re going to be faced with the potential issue that you will be in a environment that is more conducive to a flame burst.

So the question for this technology is that it benefit you more than it puts you at risk and can you take steps to protect yourself from that risk.

I attempted an experiment on Sunday.  I wanted to see if I could drive and write with Dragon Naturally Speaking 9 at the same time. 

Safety was my primary goal, so I utilized a hands free microphone, similar to one that I have for my cell phone.  I strapped my laptop down to a table top attached to the passenger’s seat and powered my laptop with a DC converter.

Here’s what I initially wrote as I got started

I am getting ready to take off in my van. I have Dragon Naturally Speaking preferred 9 running on my laptop which is strapped down to a table top attached to my passenger seat.

I’m backing out of my driveway right now looking backwards what you were going to be very careful.

I kind of look at this like I’m dictating what I’m doing to get warmed up before I start writing a few e-mails.

Alright I’m headed down the road, I just turn off my wireless on my laptop. I figure there’s no reason to confuse my computer while it attempts to transmit to a WiFi router that’s not there. I’m going over a set of railroad tracks right now(note that didn?t get transcribed correctly so I had to edit it ) I was curious to see how a shaken up computer tends to work with Dragon Naturally Speaking, and all in all it didn?t do bad.

So I’m heading to a client’s house to help them establish three things:

1. An e-commerce website including a business front contact information policies such as privacy policy returns and warranty policy and more
2. A shopping cart
3. And a professional business blog which they will use to provide tutorials for the products that they sell (they offer a wholesale storefront for remodelers and in addition to everything else they’re going to show visitors how to install some of the products they sell, make repairs or even maintain DIY equipment and tools.)

So I loaded up my car with all the essentials, my laptop, my projector, a TV tray to put any of those things on if I need extra space.

As I am driving on the road, I realize that I forgot a couple things like a blank CD or blank DVD, I plan on recording a few videos of the tutorial that I’m going to create for them and I want to give them the DVD at the end of it so that they can go back and watch lessons over again if they need a reminder on any of the things I will be training them on as we establish their site. This will also establish a good record of what they did and why they did it in case they need to make a change in the future.
