SalesForce.com may have made the model of moving great software capabilities to the web but they were not the end all solution. Today I would like to cover an excellent example of an improving technology that has improved primarily because it has moved to the Web.

I am reviewing services provided by a sponsor MerchantOS. This is a sponsored review but it is an excellent application and example of the right way build a web based tool for mass adoption.

In this case we’re talking about point of sale software (POS software) services moved from the cash register in a store to a computer in the store connected to the internet. Up front my first and primary concern centered around internet connectivity, what happens when the internet goes down?

MerchantOS provides a system that allows transactions to continue even while the internet is down, caching the transactions for a resynchronization once service is brought back up, so the issue is greatly reduced.

Now in the case of this product web based POS has been very aptly covered by Merchant OS. They have done an excellent job of describing the benefits of their offering. I think that the words are excellent, but would also like to provide a map of those details to help you see the big picture a little more rapidly.

Hobart Swan recently announced his intent to depart from the Mindjet team.  He has been an integral part of the MindManager community for many years now helping to promote MindManager, MindMapping and the entire network of trainers, developers, resellers and possibly most importantly the third party developers.

As a member of the MindManager Yahoo Group for several years as well as the MindManager community, I have had the good fortune to work with Hobie and I can say that we are going to miss his efforts in this area.

He is making a move to a new organization that has a focus on Health Care.  This does not mean that he is leaving Mindmapping behind as his new employer will need and benefit from Hobie’s skills in marketing and in Mind Mapping solutions, communications and educational tools.

Simple Server Monitor provies a free trial for a service that allows you to monitor your servers and track performance metrics to insure that the servers are still up and running.

Simple Server Monitor’s program basically can login to your server or service and actively monitor the process that are taking place.  The software runs in as a Windows Service so you do not have to be logged in for it to keep track of your servers.  It will provide event notifications in a pop up or in the form of a group email if anything does not complete on time or if the server goes down.

Its in beta right now.  But its price is normally less than $50.  You can get a 20% discount even on that while its in Beta.
