Diesel Engines: Improving Technology Series

Identify Improvements in Progress

Diesel technology is delivering higher torque and horse power and better fuel efficiency with many new electronic and mechanical components to make the technology more dependable and more effective.

Why is the owner making the changes

The entire truck industry has embraced this and worked to increase capabilities and performance.  There are many examples of this with the Ford Powerstroke, Dodge Cummins and even the Chevy Duramax.

What is the expected impact of the Change

Dependability of diesel trucks and cars is increasing while mileage and Diesel Performance increase in tandom.

Is the improvement on Target or a mis-direction

This improvement is headed in the proper direction. The potential has been there for several decades but has only really taken off in the last half dozen years with the explosion in popularity of trucks combined with the increase in oil prices that drove demand for more fuel efficient vehicles.

Link Baiting Your Website’s Hook to catch a Google Fish

Page Rank

Page Rank used to play a large role in Google’s analysis of link popularity for returning successful search results.  But Google doesn’t hire some of the best mathematicians from around the world to build complex formulas for nothing.  Nope, they keep those guys working around the clock in some bunker of a laboratory under Shiloh Mountain working to determine if a websites words contain the right keywords to refer their customer searcher.

They are trying to stay ahead of the many Search Engine Optimization SEO specialists that learned how to manipulate Googles Search Results by inflating their Page Rank.

LSI

Google now uses new metrics including a system referred to as Latent Symantec Indexing (LSI) which is a process that looks at the incoming links to your website and reviews the content on the page they came from and the header or title of the page at that location.  A referring page with the link to your site will score higher for your site if their content is similar in nature to your page where they are linking to yours.

Link Baiting

The key is that you want to build unique content that everyone on this Google’s Green Earth will want to link in their own webpage or blog.  If you can come up with that content and copyright it until the cows come home, then you can maitain your sites popularity.

Blogs are a great source for contextual referral services.   Sponsors can connect with Blogitive, who will pay bloggers to review and  write about your site with the keywords contextually written up in a way that maximizes the LSI potential and which can spawn more link baiting.  So if you have a website and want to get or keep your natural search engine traffic, you might want to consider baiting that hook and if visitors are important for your business then chumming the water might even land you a bigger Google fish.

Locks: Broken Technology Series

This one is so simple that its obvious, especially if you are an expert at picking locks.

Most door locks, pad locks and other types of locks have not evolved well with the times.  Yes there are some high end products that provide somewhat better security but in general the door lock is in need of an overhaul.

The Wall Street Journal ocvered a piece a couple weeks back about a group of crackers that work to pick locks.  They among other thing provide their findings to the manufacturers and the world for that matter by sharing tutorials and videos on the internet.

That’s right YouTube may be carrying the black hat equivalent of open source cracks on your front door.  Forget the security flaws in your Windows XP system that Microsoft just learned about a week ago when a sixteen year old programmer from The Netherlands published a flaw on the internet.

These guys and girls might be publishing video instructions on YouTube that will help someone walk in your front door.

Sure that’s scary in a Department of Homeland defense color coded red sort of way, but the open source share the weakness and make it public so the public will demand better kind of approach has some validity.  Many police officers will tell you and show you after a break in that your door locks are probably sub par.  So maybe a little social awareness of the broken technology of locks is what we really do need!

High Tech Illumination: Improving Technology Series

The future of lighting is rapidly moving to Xenon and LED technologies. The lighting is brighter and requires less energy. The applications of these technologies are moving into more and more products.

One of the most practical applications for these technologies is in the use of portable lighting especially where the lighting required is more critical than the average users needs.

Whether the need is in a military application, hunting application, police work or extreme conditions of cold or even submersed, these technologies are a perfect fit.

You can see the examples of the technology already on the market with products from the Pelican line of flashlights. Pelican flashlights come in infra red, Xenon and LED submersible work lights. Some of these flashlights are designed so as to include outgassing systems to prevent the accumulation of gas and prevent sparks and dangerous situations in working conditions that may be volatile. OpticsPlanet also provides surefire flashlights
.

Identify Improvements in Progress

More suppliers and designers of consumer lighting devices are turning to LED and Xenon technologies to provide brighter, longer lasting and more energy efficient products.

These products are also safer for application and use in a number of hostile environmental conditions.

Why is the owner making the changes

The technology is becoming more affordable to produce and many professional and military use requirements have fielded the technology to the level that refinements have been made and costs reduced making the products more feasible and practical for every day consumers.

What is the expected impact of the Change

Devices will result in more energy savings and more effectiveness of lighting in situations where lighting can be critical to avoiding accidents or harm to people.

Is the improvement on Target or a mis-direction

The improvement is on target and rapidly improving in most areas. The technology has made the most improvement in hand held lighting, automobile and consumer electronic devices but is lagging in deployment in household and business lighting situations.

Improving Technology Series

For the last week, we’ve been running a series of articles covering technologies that are broken.  This week I’m going to start running a complimentary series entitled, “Improving Technology Series.”

In this new series we’ll identify some improvements in progress, why the owners are making the changes and the expected impact.

We’ll also attempt to identify if the change that’s taking place is on target or if the ‘fix isn’t in’ meaning that the improvement is an improvement but not really the one that most people would want to see for that technology.  Below is a Map of the template that I’ll be using to bring it all together.
