Slim Phone Coolness Penetrates Finnish Parkas and Wakes up Nokia

After dismissing the need for a slim cell phone that is too easily lost in the pockets of a Finnish parka, Nokia finally seems to be awaking to the fact that its phones are no longer considered cool.  In a decade long role reversal, Nokia has had the tides turned on it to learn that its phones are not thin enough to be considered cool unlike Motorola.

It seems like just yesterday that Nokia was showing up Motorola (the cell phone leader of the day back in the mid 90’s) with cooler phones that had that amazing DIGITAL capability that was all the rage with the kids and more importantly with cellular carriers.

Now Nokia has brought on a new design chief, Alastair Curtis, and they are hoping to take some actions to stem the bleeding from thin phone sales spurred on by Motorola and copied by Samsung the respective number 2 and three market share leaders in cellular handsets.

It remains to be seen if Nokia can fend off this onslaught and bring to bear their strengths of solid software and ease of use, nifty but functional catchwords that are important, but don’t get units sold in the store.  Nokia current slim phone the E50 (note the catchy slim sounding name) is 15.5mm thick as compared to the 8mm Slivr(not a very slender sounding name at all!).  Samsung clocks in with the slimmest phone of them all the X820, but it sacrifices many other cool looking features like a nice outer shell and attractive buttons to offer up that size factor and win the title.

So far Motorola’s in between size seems to be winning the day, despite a history of software problems and ease of use complaints.  Motorola has been playing catch up and working to fix its problems for a half dozen years, while Nokia has apparently lost site of its roots and how to hold onto popularity by being cool!

Verizon Punches Cingular, T-Mobile and Sprint Right in the YouTube

Verizon pulled off a coup d’ etat over its rivals Cingular, T-Mobile and Sprint by securing an exclusive but limited time partnership with YouTube.

Verizon Wireless will offer YouTube videos through its subscription based V Cast Service.  V Cast costs $15 per month or $3 for a single day.  This signals YouTube’s first foray into an agreement with a wireless carrier and will put Verizon and its customers ahead of the pack as long as they can hold onto the exclusive arrangement.

YouTube was created with a model that provided access to anyone with internet access and providing an exclusive offering even in a mobile setting runs counter to the key elements that made it popular in the first place.

It also remains to be seen whether or not this exclusive arrangement between Verizon and YouTube (owned by Google) will extend over to GoogleVideo, which used to be a competitor of YouTube prior to the acquisition.

It might also signal to other video providers such as MetaCafe, Ifilm, Brightcove and Microsoft that there is no time like now to provide a mobile solution.  In fact if competing services offered up a world wide video service to all wireless carriers it could trump Verizon and leave Verizon holding a very expensive YouTube of funny amateur videos.

China Offers Up Check in 3G Chess Game

China has just made a move to Check Western corporations in the high stakes chess game of 3G telecom.  Motorola, Lucent, Nortel and Ericsson all stand to lose out if China proceeds down the path of promoting 3G networks through home grown Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corporation.

Both Huawei and ZTE have benefited from various types of partnerships with some of the same Western firms.  China looks at it like their fledgling companies are growing up.  However, many view this as a significant indication that the business culture in China is dodgy enough to take the knowledge and Western Wisdom and employ it internally to the detriment of the firms, corporations and governments that have invested huge amounts of money in the potential of a Chinese economy, which has thus far only paid off with cheaper manufacturing but has not provided a larger contribution to the global economy of consumers.

Chinese Protectionism: Don’t kid yourself about a market that is not Free

Despite the fact that Huawei and ZTE’s home grow technology has not been proven and is not in fact ready for deployment, China appears to be stalling in its decision to license 3G technology to carriers.  This delaying tactic is proving to be further evidence that China is protecting its state sponsored corporations over private firms from abroad, despite the investment of money, knowledge, and time made by those same firms.

Chinese Politicians Shooting their Own Economy in the Foot

China walks a dangerous tightrope with these tactics.  If they continue to thwart efforts to make the Chinese market a free market then foreign investment and partnerships will dry up rather quickly, which could stunt the Chinese economy significantly.  Many firms are deeply invested and committed to China, however history has proven many times that these same companies will pull anchor and move to a new cheaper harbor of labor and resources at either the first sign of trouble or at the first indication that a better deal is available elsewhere.
