The Podcast Voice Guys!

I mentioned this on a different blog today, but I met a great couple of guys at the Podcast Expo.  Bill Fortune and Joe Klein make up a team called The Podcast Voice Guys.  They have a radio background and a half dozen decades in the business between them.

If you are putting together a voice production, an audio book, a Podcast or even a voice ad, you should definitely consider these gentlemen.  They’ve both got great voices and can bring a level of professionalism to an Internet show that is pretty amazing.

Check out their Demos, I guarantee that you’ve heard them before!

Coupons delivered Straight to Your Cellphone

Who says that T-mobile is the only company that has to save money with cell phones?

I wanted to share with my readers a handy little application that can save you money using your cellphone.

Cellfire offers a program that delivers up coupons straight to your cell phone such that you can redeem them at a number of participating places from TGI Fridays, Bath and Bodyworks, and Hollywood Video.

You can download the software or even get the download by sending a text message to 22888 or go to Get Your Free Copy of Cellfire to Start Saving Today!

Now, I always get these great paper offers, even get some good things through email, but that never does me any good when I walk into a restaurant or into a lobby of a hotel or something.  I have my cell phone with me everywhere I go and that means I’ve got access to discounts via my cell phone 24/7.

Now take TGI Fridays for example, they currently have a coupon for $5 off a $15 purchase and another for a free appetizer.  This is a pretty good deal for someone in college and even if you have extraordinary means, you can take that $5 and pass it along in the tip to your waitress.

My personal favorite is probably the Hollywood video offer which throws in a free rental or another for a free used DVD.  If you are like me an tend to walk out of Hollywood video with a half dozen DVD’s, one third for yourself and two thirds for the kids, getting a free anything is a good deal!

T-Mobile learning a lesson from its Parent: Don’t spend to much on 3G content!

Finally!  T-Mobile is starting to spend some money and it can’t be soon enough.

T-Mobile is planning on spending about $2.7 billion dollars to upgrade their market in America to 3G next year as they attempt to catch-up to Cingular and Verizon.

DISCLAIMER:  I’m a T-Mobile user and very happy with the service!

T-Mobile’s parent has created a number of film and music content deals in Europe, but they plan on using a different strategy in the US where they are working to partner with Google and MySpace to provide mobile content.

It appears that T-Mobile is attempting to learn from the mistakes of their German parent Deutsche Telekom.

A large fortune was spent in Europe by multiple carriers on spectrum and content and little can be shown for it.  T-Mobile recently purchased $4.2billion worth of spectrum from the US government, which will double its capacity and now the $2.7 billion infrastructure buildout on its network will provide the means to exploit that spectrum.

Point of Sale Software at a Low Price

Many areas of doing business are rapidly getting cheaper and cheaper reducing the barrier to entry for more and more entrepreneurs.  For companies that are going to sell product in a retail environment, establishing a solid Point of Sale (POS) system is essential.

A computer, a bard code scanner and a quick download from DPos and you can start to get up and running with this technology.  DPos provides a cheap pos system at a price point less than $50.  It doesn’t get much more affordable than that!

The software leans towards the functional over pretty, but in a retail environment functional, fast and simple are all very important traits.  Keep it simple applies in force and its a lot easier to keep it simple if you have a solid point of sale system to track what is going on in your store.

Video Search Engines - Indexing Internet Video

A couple weeks back when I attended the Podcast Expo in Ontario California, I talked with a company named PodZinger powered by BBN Technologies exhibiting that specializes in some extraordinary technology.

Their company indexes the audio and video uploaded onto the internet.  They also offer services that will sell software to companies to allow them to index say phone conversations

or video presentations stored on a server and more.

Think about that for just a second!

The application of that type of technology is very impressive.  In a former life as an intelligence analyst if I had had a tool to index say all of the conversations of person A talking on the phone to Persons B, C and E, such that I look for key phrases or groupings of words then I can streamline the need to read through thousands of pages of printed text.

Now, the obvious background of this technology comes from the intelligence world and has been applied to the civilian sector.  PodZinger is powered by BBN Technologies.  The WSJ had an article a few days ago talking about the need of web video surfers to differentiate between ‘Tom Cruise’ and ‘Cruise Missiles’ in a search.

In addition to indexing the audio dialogue from MP3 files and stripped out of video files, additional software is evolving to allow for facial recognition, tagging of specific frames in a video file, and mapping of background settings.

Example of a search with keywords  |   Michael J Fox

(article written a couple days after the Michael J Fox v Rush Limbaugh splash)

Image of search example

Now you can see from this search a result that shows where the keyword of the search was used in a video from Abc World News, which has been transcribed with voice recognition and indexed.  You can further click on the links to listen to that section of audio and video.

Diatribe

In a police state these are all very important tools to develop to maintain control over said police state, however fairly basic consumer demand is rapidly entering into the supply chain and creating additional demand for this type of service.  Instead of trying to figure out where Osama Bin Laden filmed his latest video from last month, Aunt Jean might want to figure out where Great Grandma Frieda had her picture taken with that strange gentleman standing close and what time of year the picture was taken or even what year the picture was taken.

Public Sector Uses

Film buffs might want to figure out where the actual location of movie was filmed.  Was Clint Eastwood in California or Montana or Spain or Italy?  Does Forest Grump’s bench actually exist in Savannah or was it staged in a part of the square that normally doesn’t have a bench?  (answer it was staged there, I lived around the corner when it was filmed and I can tell you who made the actual box of chocolates too! They were rice crispy treats covered in chocolate not the real deal as too much chocolate would have probably made Tom Hanks sick to his stomach and that wouldn’t have helped his running time, but I digress . . .)

From a personal perspective how would you feel about a company indexing every conversation that you had on a video loaded up onto the internet?  It happens to politicians and movie stars all the time.  But indexing is coming to a Joe Schmoe near you very very soon, and the next Schmoe might actually be you!
