The Long View
Before entering this industry, Brett grew up in a family business where he contributed to the business in many ways from construction to sales at a very early age. Seeking funds for college, Brett entered the US Army as an Intelligence Analyst in 1991, studied cryptography and other areas of signal intelligence and general warfare battle planning. Brett was responsible for several million dollars worth of highly classified equipment. He worked on several country focused intelligence teams in the early 90's and ran a Balkans team. Brett helped field a new battlefield intelligence system in the early 90's working with division level Joint Chiefs to refine battle damage assessment techniques and strategies. Not looking to make a career in the military, Brett turned down a full scholarship to West Point.
He left the military to pursue a degree and become a financial writer. He studied at Illinois State University where he received a full scholarship from the State of Illinois plus money earned from the GI Bill. He went on to achieve a double major in Accounting and Finance (Bachelors of Science) in 2000.
While at ISU Brett worked full time for the US Postal Service in a Remote Encoding plant that processed 2-7 million pieces of mail digitally every day working on a 30 minute continual process. Process improvement and management were keys to success. Brett worked his way up from data entry to the position of Assistant Manager, where he was responsible for over 300 employees.
Brett started his own contracting company during this time as well as part of a paid internship program and managed two teams of employees working across a tri county area in Central Illinois.
After completing his degree at ISU, Brett and his family relocated to Boca Raton Florida, where Brett began work with Motorola as a Credit Analyst managing the what would transform into the Verizon Wireless account. This took place in May 2000, and the Verizon Wireless account quickly came one of Motorola's most important accounts as the company went through a number of reorganizations following the internet bust. Brett was central to keeping the account open and functioning especially through a period of tight credit and massive restructuring at the new Verizon Wireless.
Brett utilized his skills of process improvement to rapidly move through several areas of the finance group cleaning up processes and accounts. He also initiated his Master's degree in 2001. By 2003 he had completed a Master's in Laws focused on offshore financial centers and international Taxation. He received his LLM (Master's in Laws) from St Thomas University School of Law in April 2003.
Brett's work, experience and education led him to take on a troubled group of Motorola's in the Atlanta area. Brett was responsible for cleaning up over $70 million of bad debt and $2 million of fraudulent activity, while simultaneously improving processes, hiring and training personnel, working through 2 Oracle upgrade implementations, and then working on a spinoff of the division to a Motorola Outsource Manufacturing partner.
Brett then transitioned to the new spin off as a key member of the finance team. The newly formed company was responsible for bringing up distribution and converting over 100 retail customers onto the new distribution platform in the middle of the Christmas shipping season of 2003. The company went from $0 to $45 million in sales in less than 90 days.
Brett continued to work for the new spin off, Giant International from 2003 until the fall of 2005 as the Contracts and AR Manager. As the contracts manager, Brett's role grew to include building new business relationships, process and pushing out product lines. Brett was also responsible for the sales of excess inventory during 2005 and was responsible for selling over $30 million in inventory.
In August of 2005, Brett and a fellow finance manager identified a number of accounting and tax irregularities at the company. They escalated these issues through the CEO, the internal auditors, the Singapore board of directors and Deloitte and Touche, the external auditors. All groups involved refused to take responsibility for the issues and due to US regulations put in place covering Sorbanes Oxley and Anti-Money Laundering, Brett became a whistle blower for the Federal Government against Giant International. This case is ongoing.
In 2004, Brett began working with a software utility called MindManager from Mindjet. This software enables visual thinking and knowledge management in the forms of electronic mindmaps. Brett went on to found a company, Softduit Partners, in 2004 established to distribute and sell MindManager through Giant International.
In late 2005, Brett Bumeter began dedicating more time to his work with Softduit Partners, and this work took the form of Business Development consulting for a number of Brett's former customers and contacts. Softduit Partners began to emerge in 2006 as a web development and design company. In mid 2006 Softduit Partner initiated some trial relationships in the blog marketing industry and by the end of the year, half of Softduit's revenues were tied to blog and internet marketing. Softduit Partners worked with a collaborative of 10,000 internet publishers in 2006 and this number would continue to grow rapidly in 2007.
In early 2007, Softduit Partners began to rapidly develop dozens of internet properties and also created a new advertising arm of Softduit Partners called the LinkyLoveArmy. The LinkyLoveArmy provides contract work to internet publishers and bloggers and provides advertising services, buzz marketing and more to companies and websites looking to elevate their website, service, product or promotion.
